Properly functioning brakes are essential not only for your safety while on the road, but for the safety of others as well. Failing brakes may give multiple indications that they need to be repaired or replaced; learning to recognize these signs will clue you in to the need to schedule brake service. If you have any questions or concerns about your car’s brakes, contact your automotive repair service to schedule a visit.

Visible Signs of Failure

You can perform a quick visual check on your car’s brakes to determine if they are in need of replacement. Squat down until you are at eye level with the spokes of your wheels and look at the metal rotor. The brake pads sit at the end of this rotor, and should be at least a quarter of an inch in thickness or more. If the pads appear very thin, have them checked by an automotive specialist.

Audible Signs of Failure

Brakes that are in need of repair may also give audible indications that service is needed. Loud metallic squeaking, squealing, grinding, or groaning sounds when you apply the brakes are all signs that your car needs attention. In many cases, these noises are caused by brake pads that have been completely worn away, allowing the metal disc and caliper of your brake system to grind against each other.

Performance Signs of Failure

Diminished braking performance is a sure sign that you need to schedule repairs. If your brake pedal seems less responsive or sinks to the floor as you brake, your brake line could have a leak. Pulling to one side during braking is a sign of uneven brake wear or problems with the brake fluid.
