While most Arizonans already know how important it is to protect themselves from sunburn, have you ever considered the effect that the sun has on your car? Prolonged exposure to sunlight can cause the paint on your vehicle to fade or oxidize, damage your seats, and significantly raise your risk of an overheated engine. Here are some tips that will help you keep your car safe from the desert sun.
Stay in the shade. To protect your vehicle from the sun’s harsh rays, try to park in the shade whenever possible. Parking in your carport or in a parking garage will also help you keep your car cool on particularly hot days. If you have to park in the sun, use a windshield shade to keep out direct sunlight.
Have your car waxed. Along with washing your car regularly, you should consider having your car waxed at least once every two months. Wax will not only help to keep dirt from sticking to your car’s exterior, but will also help to shield the paint from the sun’s ultraviolet rays. Think of it as giving your car a long-lasting coat of sunscreen.
Protect your seating. The sun’s UV rays can crack leather seats and cause cloth upholstery to fade or change color. Fortunately, you can reduce the likelihood of sun damage by adding protective seat covers to your car. Applying a leather conditioner to your seats will also help keep them looking new.
Maintain your engine. The most serious danger the sun poses to your car is causing your engine to overheat. To keep your engine running smoothly, be sure to have it professionally checked on a regular basis. You should have your battery and cooling system checked as often as the manufacturer recommends, and be sure to check and top off your fluids whenever necessary.
