You rely on your brakes every time you drive to bring your car to a stop. Thus, properly maintaining your brakes is extremely important for your safety and that of the other cars on the road every time you get behind the wheel. Brake service should be a part of your regular automotive maintenance plan; however, if you notice brake issues between maintenance visits, schedule an inspection and repairs promptly.
Most automotive brake systems incorporate brake pads, which provide friction against the wheels to slow your car when you hit the brakes. Over time, these brake pads are worn away; when they are too thin or completely gone, your brakes won’t provide adequate friction and your car’s braking ability will decline. You can quickly and easily check the status of your brake pads by looking between the spokes of your wheels to find the metal rotor. Beside the rotor is a metal caliper, and between the rotor and the caliper is your brake pad. Brake pads should be at least a quarter of an inch thick—if you think your brake pads are thinner than a quarter inch, schedule replacement service.
Your Brakes Squeal or Grind
When they’re in good shape, your brakes should make no noise at all. Thus, brakes that make squealing or grinding noises are in need of professional attention. In most cases, squealing and grinding mean your brake pads have worn too thin to do their job properly and require replacement. Schedule this service promptly, as a lack of brake pads can quickly cause further damage to your wheels or brake system, while also affecting the time it takes your car to come to a stop when you press on the brakes.
